Kennedy said he expects the House and Senate can at least get on board with the same budget resolution, which at the moment provides different instructions for the tax writing Senate Finance and House Ways and Means committees.
“The president says, OK, I’m listening to both sides. I agree with this. I don’t agree with that,” Kennedy said. “We come up with a final plan, and then the president puts his full weight behind it.”
Tillis also noted the victory by two elections in Florida would help pad House Republicans’ slim majority. Now Speaker Mike Johnson can lose up to three members on party-line votes.
For his part, Finance Chair Mike Crapo (R-Idaho) said he “just disagree[s]” with special lead House Republicans’ complaints about the tax plan’s deficit impact.
The House plan’s assumption that an extension of Trump’s 2017 tax cuts must be paid for is an “inaccurate description of our deficit,” Crapo said.
It’s unclear whether Trump could ultimately roll House Republicans who have a problem with the Senate’s tax plan.
