Jordan speaking at WordPress Translation Day 2020

Post by pappu9265 »

During the first quarter of 2020, Jordan and his colleagues organized five offline meetings, but due to the onset of the pandemic and forced isolation, in-person meetings had to be stopped. However, the Guarenas-Guatire community was looking for ways to continue communicating and, with the support of sponsors, began organizing online events called “WordPress a la medianoche” (WordPress at midnight).

The format of these events was inspired by Alexis Arnal, who suggested meeting at midnight to make the most of the internet speed, which usually improves somewhat at that time.

At the time of writing, Jordan and his team have already organized 16 “WordPress a la medianoche” events, each attended by up to 50 people. These impressive results for a relatively young meetup have helped maintain the exchange of information during these difficult times.

One of the benefits of online events is the ability to invite people from other countries and hold meetings in partnership with other meetups. An example is a special event on translation with Javier Esteban, a phone number library member of the group of translators from Spain. The meeting was also happily attended by translators from Mexico, Costa Rica, Peru and Colombia.

Strengthened by the community
Jordan is confident that he would have continued working independently even if he had not met the WordPress community.

He says: “Luckily, this was not the case, and I was able to have many transformative experiences that opened my mind to the meaning of the words ‘community’ and ‘volunteering’.”

Yordan felt the support of the community, and this led him to participate in many other activities in new capacities, including the role of locale manager for the Venezuela-Spanish locale , a WordPress.tv moderator , and a member of the Support Forum , helping people with technical issues. He has also developed free plugins for the official WordPress directory and spoken at various events , including WordCamp Spain 2020 .
