The concept of freedom comes up a lot in the WordPress community. WordPress is built on the GPL (General Public License), free software, and open source values. In fact, anyone can work remotely or be their own boss to gain more freedom in their work and life. Tyler feels like he has never fit into a traditional work pattern. He has found that his strong desire for freedom resonates with the freedom and opportunity he feels WordPress provides for him and thousands of others.
Tyler describes how his “inner opportunist” got him into trouble in 2013. Having dropped out of college due to a brain aneurysm, he needed capital to fund his first startup. He says he found a quick, but illegal, way to make money. Between shifts as a waiter, he worked on prototypes for his first product. The company grew quickly, and he had to work long hours special lead to protect his patents and take his research and development to the next level. Everything went down the drain when his illegal actions landed him in jail.
He recalls that meeting other inmates showed him how good his situation was compared to most. He was educated, well-off, loved, and knew he had a future after he was released. He learned that many inmates had never finished high school and didn’t know how to use a computer. While inside, Tyler taught science, math, writing, reading, and social studies. He realized that without the skills and support, many inmates would be in dire straits after they were released. He says it’s not easy to get the mental health support and job training needed to thrive after prison.
"Freedom is more than just being on the other side. You also need dignity and civil rights."
He believed that his determination and the support of his loved ones were sufficient to enable him to move on to his next (legitimate) business challenge as soon as he could.
