The Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) is a signaling protocol used for initiating, maintaining, modifying, and terminating real-time communication sessions over Internet Protocol (IP) networks. In the context of phone numbers, SIP is fundamental to how voice calls (and other multimedia communications) are set up and managed in modern, IP-based telephony systems, effectively bridging the gap between traditional phone numbers and the world of internet communication.

Conversely, when a call originates from the PSTN to a SIP-enabled phone number, the PSTN gateway converts the SS7 signaling and circuit-switched voice into SIP messages and IP packets.
3. Key SIP Components in Number Communication:
SIP User Agent (UA): This is the endpoint (e.g., a VoIP phone, a softphone on a computer, a smartphone running a VoLTE client) that initiates or receives SIP calls. It represents the phone number to the network.
SIP Proxy Server: These servers route SIP messages between User Agents. They perform number translation, locate the called party, and forward SIP requests. For phone numbers, a proxy server might perform an ENUM lookup or direct the call to a PSTN gateway.
SIP Registrar: This server processes SIP REGISTER requests from User Agents, which allow endpoints to register their current IP address and presence information with a SIP domain, associating it with their phone number or SIP URI.
4. SIP's Role in Modern Networks (VoIP, VoLTE, VoNR):
Voice over IP (VoIP): SIP is the de facto standard for establishing and managing voice calls over the internet. Services like Skype, Zoom Phone, and many business phone systems heavily rely on SIP to connect calls using phone numbers.
Voice over LTE (VoLTE): In 4G LTE networks, voice calls are carried as data over the IP network, instead of falling back to 2G/3G circuit-switched networks. SIP, within the IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) architecture, is the core signaling protocol that manages these VoLTE calls using mobile phone numbers.
