What is call waiting?

Call waiting is a telecommunication feature that notifies a telephone subscriber of an incoming call while they are already engaged in an active phone conversation. It allows the user to temporarily suspend their current call, answer the incoming call, and then switch back and forth between the two calls, or choose to end one.

How it Works:
Notification Tone: While you are on a call, if a second incoming call arrives, you will hear a distinct, brief "call waiting" tone (often a soft click, beep, or series of tones) in your ear. This tone is usually different from other network tones like busy signals or dial tones. The person calling you will typically hear a normal ringing tone, unaware that you are already on another call.
Display (for compatible phones): On modern phones (both fixed-line and mobile), the screen will also display the caller ID information of the new incoming call, showing you who is trying to reach you.

Network Dependence: Call waiting is a network-dependent feature. Your mobile operator or fixed-line provider must support it, and you typically need to activate it (though it's often enabled by default on many mobile plans).
Limited to Two Calls: Standard call waiting typically handles only one incoming call at a time. If a third call comes in while you are already managing two, it will likely get a busy signal or be directed to voicemail.
